Leaving a Legacy

Every day, our work is made possible by the incredible generosity of our community. But what if your generosity could go even further?

By including The Mustard Seed Project in your will or estate plan, you can create a lasting legacy that will continue to provide comfort, care, and support for seniors for years to come. Your gift, no matter the size, will ensure that future generations of older adults have access to vital services, a sense of community, and the dignity they deserve.

You’ll be joining a special group of people, The Crandall Society, who have chosen to make a profound difference. These are individuals who have a deep passion for the well-being of seniors, and their forward-thinking generosity is a beacon of hope for so many.

As you’ll read in the stories below, a legacy gift is more than a donation; it’s a promise. It’s a promise that our work will endure, and that we will continue to help seniors age in place. It’s a powerful way to ensure your values live on and continue to impact the lives of those who need it most.

A Woman Who Made a Difference

Lois Crandall lived a full life. She received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, taught school for 30 years, was married and raised three children. She was active in Lakebay Community Church and the Key Peninsula Historical Society.

Lois passed away in 2014, but her legacy lives on. By naming The Mustard Seed Project in her will, though she was not wealthy; she had a huge impact on The Mustard Seed and gave us a chance to pursue the audacious dream of building supportive housing for KP elders. Her relatively modest gift allowed us to purchase the Crandall Center (our senior center, which had formerly been a restaurant) and the vacant commercially zoned property where the Village was built just across the street from the Crandall Center.

Lois’s legacy gift came at just the right moment for the Mustard Seed Project and set the stage for all that followed right up to the present day.

A Man in a Santa suit

Bill Looney was a man of action and had a mission he found later in life —equipping himself with a Santa suit and visiting local nursing homes, bringing gifts to isolated residents and making them feel special.

After Bill experienced the “joy on their faces…[and] believing that thousands of elderly people, either home-bound or in small adult-care facilities, were being forgotten at Christmas,” he began “establishing an organization whose main goal would be to make sure that anyone that wanted a visit from Santa Claus” would get one. Bill’s vision grew into the William A Looney Family Foundation (WALFF) after his passing in 2015.

The Looney Foundation discovered the mission of The Mustard Seed Project in 2018 and after seeing our impact in the community, gifted us with a $3 million award in 2021 that transformed our ability to serve our mission.

Thanks to Bill and WALFF, The Mustard Seed has been able to open our Mustard Seed Cafe (now a social hub at the Crandall Center), purchase accessible buses for our transportation programs (and for use by community partners), host hundreds of seniors for our annual Santa for Seniors gatherings, distributed thousands of gift bags thanks to our partnership with Lutheran Community Services NW (also a recipient of WALFF’s support), provided funds to beautify our campus, enabled our launch of a home-delivered meal program for KP elders—and much more!

Because Bill cared for older folks and saw a need, and because we at The Mustard Seed saw the same need and had a vision to meet that need; we are now able to fulfill our mission in ways we only imagined a few years ago.

Join the Crandall Society

Should you choose to leave The Mustard Seed Project part of your estate, you will join Lois and Bill as a member of the Crandall Society and help ensure the Village and The Mustard Seed Project can continue to make the Key Peninsula the best place to grow older. Your legacy gift to The Mustard Seed could make a difference we can’t even imagine today.

If you’d like to make that kind of a difference, please consider a legacy gift to The Mustard Seed Project. Give us a call at 253-884-9814 or email ceo@themustardseedproject.org to discuss how you can make the kind of difference that will last for years to come.
